Dezadeash Lake - Titl'ÀT MÄn Water Monitoring

Dezadeash Lake is a relatively warm lake by Yukon standards and it is well known how lake trout seek out cold water inputs in the lake during the summer months. Monitoring of water temperatures in the lake is important for a number of aspects including climate change and the ability to inform fisheries management on the lake.

Based upon discussion with the YG Senior Fish Biologist it was suggested that the deployment of water temperature moorings in Dezadeash Lake would be a very worthwhile project for the Alsek RRC to undertake. Similar monitoring equipment is currently deployed in other lakes in the Yukon including Kluane, Aishihik, Canyon, and Teslin lakes with other lakes being considered by YG and/or other RRCs.

Moorings

The moorings consist of a large weight (approx. 50 lbs) connected to a line with a subsurface float; this causes the line to stand vertical in the water. Along the line, water temperature loggers are attached and record data every hour for up to 4 years before the loggers require replacement.

The data loggers were successfully recovered in March 2024 to collect the data from them and were re-deployed the same day.
